SANN VANNA

I come from Kompong Chhnang province. I am one of seven siblings: six girls and one boy. Both of my parents passed away when I was 10 years old. I lived with my sister before I went to live in the Kompong Chhnang Orphanage Center. I came to the orphanage when I was 12 years old, and stayed there for 9 years. In the orphanage, I was taught various Cambodian traditional dances. We had free time to go read in the library, play games together and do origami. I finished 12th grade in 2015, while still at the orphanage.

When I was in 12th grade, Som Sovann [Global Children’s House Supervisor] came to my orphanage to tell us about Global Children Cambodia. He gave me applications to fill out to be accepted for their scholarship. I was so excited to be accepted for the Global Children scholarship. I didn’t know what I would do without it. When I first came to Global Children, it was a really eye-opening experience. I met people from different provinces and who have different life experiences. I consider everyone in the program like my own siblings. I am very happy that I am able to live and go to university in a big city like Phnom Penh. I am also glad to have been able to make new friends, to live rent free and to eat good food. In my free time, I like to read, do schoolwork, listen to music, watch TV, cook, and go on Facebook and Youtube.

I have chosen a major that I love, and that I am passionate about. Even though the electrical engineering major is a bit difficult, I am going to try my hardest and I will not give up. In the future, I hope to have a good job and a nice house with a happy family. I will persevere not only for my own sake but also for my family’s future happiness.
