My name is Cheat Chak, a student from Siem Reap province. I am an orphan. My father left me when I was just 7 days old, and my mother remarried and left me when I was 6. My grandmother took me in and raised me. I had to walk over a kilometer to school every day with old, worn clothes and no money for snacks, so I had no friends. During the rainy season, I would catch fish and crabs to sell for money to support my studies. Sadly, my grandmother passed away, leaving me completely alone. I asked my aunt to let me live with her so I could continue high school. I rode my bicycle over 10 kilometers every day for three years. She often scolded me and sometimes didn’t leave food for me. I went to bed hungry many nights. After finishing Grade 12, my life felt like it was in darkness again. I had always wanted to become a doctor, but it seemed impossible.

Then I was selected by Global Children Cambodia. They provided everything-accommodation, food, proper clothing, and school supplies. Most importantly, they gave me the chance to study medicine, my dream! I passed the entrance exam and was accepted into medical school. Mom Laura has become like my grandmother. In the future, I want to become a great doctor who can help many people in Cambodia, especially in my village. Thank you, Mom Laura, for changing the destiny of a poor child who lived in darkness for many years.
