My name is Yoeum Makara and I am a student at University of Technology in Phnom Penh. I am a son of two farmers in Siem Reap province. I am the third child among four siblings. Both of my parents are farmers but they could barely make ends meet. They earn an average of 5 dollars a day which makes it impossible to provide our family with proper meals, schooling and adequate healthcare. When I was in high school, I didn’t have proper clothes, school supplies or tuition money for any extracurricular classes.
Against all odds, I was trying so hard to finish school with very good GPA. After I finished high school, my goal was to attend a university in Phnom Penh. However, I knew that my family couldn’t afford paying for it because my father is getting older and my mother has a terminal illness that requires a monthly checkup. All hope was lost.
On one lucky day, Hun Sarath introduced me to Global Children Cambodia so I submitted my application and it was accepted. Right now I am a student at University of Technology in Phnom Penh majoring in Engineering. I want to become a well-known engineer that is able to help build Cambodia.
